Perikatan must accept Anwar’s govt will stay till end of term, says Syahredzan

Be responsible, forget about toppling administration, Bangi MP tells opposition

KUALA LUMPUR – The Perikatan Nasional leadership must acknowledge that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government will continue to govern the country until the end of their five-year term.

DAP central executive committee member Syahredzan Johan said that there should be no attempt to disrupt or challenge the existing federal government through political means.

He, who also serves as Bangi MP, said it was necessary for the opposition to adopt a responsible stance.

“Set aside ego and the wishful thinking of seizing control over the government; instead, initiate negotiations with the government regarding allocation for MPs.

“We have a ‘precedent’ with a memorandum of understanding that was previously established between Pakatan Harapan and the government led by former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

“If you just adhere to the MoU, it eliminates the necessity to explicitly express support for the government.

“But you only pledge that you will not be involved in any activities to overthrow the government,” he said in a statement.

Syahredzan said that, akin to the anti-hopping law, the ongoing negotiations could include law amendments aimed at institutionalising MPs’ allocations as one of the conditions.

He said this would prevent the matter from remaining solely at the prime minister’s discretion in the future.

Noting the importance of working together to ensure that the country is on the right track, he emphasised the need to foster cooperation between the government and the opposition.

“Let’s work together to ensure that this country is on the right track, both the government and the opposition,” he added.

Earlier, Syahredzan also addressed the revelation by Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal, indicating that 10 more opposition MPs were prepared to openly pledge their support for the prime minister.

He said they were Bersatu MPs from Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Perak, Pahang, Terengganu, Melaka, Kelantan and Selangor. – January 27, 2024
