KUALA LUMPUR – The police recruitment procedures (SOPs) do not need to be improved despite recent reports of disciplinary issues among the force, said Deputy Inspector-General Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
Instead, he said, focus should be directed towards beefing up supervision and monitoring to prevent misconduct among officers, some of which has led to criminal charges.
“There is nothing wrong with our recruitment SOPs. What we have an issue with is our supervision (of police personnel).
“If we can improve our supervision, the issue (of police misconduct) should decrease,” Ayob told a press conference at the Bukit Aman police headquarters, here, today.
Ayob also said that, while most police personnel who were found to be involved in crimes were “okay” before joining the force, certain circumstances caused them to stray from the right path.
“Most of them (police) were okay before they joined the force, (but) maybe they changed because of the environment or they could not resist temptation and got involved in criminal activities.
“What matters is that we will take strict action and not compromise (with such practices),” he said, pointing to how police have pressed charges against a number of its men previously involved in criminal cases.
He added that while those found to have played a part in such cases are considered a small number within the force, their actions tarnish the police’s image as a whole.
“For example, those involved (in misconduct) could be only 2% (of the police force) while the other 98% are okay.
“This is why if they’re found to have taken part (in criminal activities), we will not negotiate taking appropriate action and charging them in court.”
In recent months, there have been a number of cases involving police members, including an incident where two cops were hauled to court last week for allegedly extorting and raping two underage college students.
Meanwhile, last December, a police deputy superintendent was charged with the murder of a 17-year-old student after the senior cop allegedly crashed his car into the teen’s motorcycle in a supposed fit of rage.
In the same month, three policemen were also charged at a magistrates’ court here for stealing RM85,000 during an earlier operation to bust undocumented migrants in the city centre. – January 23, 2024
