KUALA LUMPUR – Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has reminded elected representatives and Parliament staffers that the institution works for the people, allowing their voices to be heard.
He added that the Parliament is vital in ensuring government policies are implemented effectively through check-and-balance.
“Although the atmosphere in the House (during sittings) can be challenging, I believe Parliament staff have put the people’s interests first.
“I would like to remind everyone that the Parliament is the highest legal institution in the country. I urge all to give their full cooperation in bringing reforms for the sake of the country’s progress,” he said in his speech for the new year in an event in Parliament here today.
He also brought up that the level of service rendered to the public has to be professional and with integrity, especially in these uncertain times.
Meanwhile, Johari paid tribute to Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar for his services as Dewan Negara president. Wan Junaidi has resigned and is speculated to take over as Sarawak governor when Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud’s tenure ends in February.
The first meeting of the third session of the Dewan Rakyat begins on February 26.
Previously, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim challenged his detractors to bring a motion of no-confidence against him in Parliament, instead of using propaganda to deceive the public. – January 22, 2024
