PUTRAJAYA – Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has reported up to a 74% reduction in dropped calls for each 4G mobile network last year.
Fahmi attributed this improvement to the concerted efforts of 4G mobile network operators in optimising their services.
Addressing the issue of dropped calls, he said a meeting was held on December 14, 2023, involving MCMC, mobile network providers and Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB). Subsequently, a workshop was organised to collaboratively find effective solutions.
Additionally, Fahmi said DNB played a role by activating the Call Re-establishment function for LTE700 coverage in the 5G network from December 21 to 29, 2023, across all 5G sites nationwide.
He said no interference or dropped calls were observed during the Cellular Service Quality Test (Voice Calls) conducted by MCMC today.
Fadzil shared the results during a press conference on the test at the ministry headquarters here, emphasising that today’s successful drive test demonstrated the telecommunications operators’ commitment to improving service quality.
“Based on today’s drive test from the Parliament building to Putrajaya, there were no dropped calls. This success will be monitored by MCMC until March 31, and telecommunications operators are required to submit a report on dropped call issues, tracking the development of this matter,” Fahmi told reporters after the test.
He highlighted that the MCMC recorded a total of 1,837 dropped call problems from January to December of the previous year, including cases outside coverage areas.
Following a workshop involving MCMC, mobile network operators and DNB, a substantial 74% reduction in dropped call issues throughout the past year was achieved.
“At the workshop, various initiatives were identified and agreed upon. In addition to optimising their networks, 4G mobile network operators and DNB’s activation of the Call Reestablishment function for the LTE700 channel in the 5G network contributed to a significant drop in dropped calls, ranging from 10% to 74% across all 4G mobile networks,” Fahmi explained.
Earlier, Fahmi, his deputy minister Teo Nie Ching and MCMC chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din conducted the Cellular Service Quality Test on a bus with the media, travelling from Parliament to Putrajaya.
The test involved the participation of senior management from CelcomDigi, Maxis, Yes (YTL Communications), Unifi Mobile (TM Tech) and U-Mobile, with MCMC officers using specialised Nemo Walker Air testing equipment for the assessments, encompassing repetitive calls and continuous calls. – January 9, 2024
