They acknowledge orchestrating suicide bombings in crowds gathered at Qasem Soleimani’s grave

KUALA LUMPUR – The Islamic State (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for two bombings in Iran on Wednesday that killed about 100 people, commemorating the death of a slain general.

World media reported the militant Sunni group said in a statement released on its social media channels that two of its members carried out suicide bombings in crowds gathered at the grave of top general Qasem Soleimani in Kerman city, in Iran’s southeast region.

The bombings yesterday also wounded scores of people who had gathered at the general’s grave.

Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim condemned the bombings yesterday, urging for justice for those responsible and conveying his condolences to Iran for the dead, expressing sorrow at the growing violence in the region amid Israel’s ongoing war on Palestine.

Qasem was a top general in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard who was killed on January 3, 2020, by a US drone.

Western media described the bombings as one of the deadliest by ISIS in recent times after the group, which also goes by the Arabic name “Daesh” and the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), was weakened from fighting with the Taliban in Afghanistan and with western powers led by the United States, France and Russia. – January 5, 2024
