KUALA LUMPUR – A trespassing order (arahan kacau ganggu) has been issued to a hotel in Port Dickson following a fatal incident right before the New Year’s countdown.

Negri Sembilan’s Occupational Health and Safety Department (JKKP) has also confiscated several documents related to the work carried out at the hotel.

These actions were taken to further investigate the incident which happened on New Year’s Eve and the hotel’s management.

A 40-year-old local man was reported to have died, while another individual was injured after being hit by fragments from a fireworks material explosion on top of the hotel’s car park structure.

Based on preliminary investigations, JKKP found that the fireworks had unexpectedly exploded while the victim, a company employee, and his three colleagues were setting up in preparation for the New Year’s celebration.

It was reported that the victim suffered injuries to the face and body and was confirmed dead at the scene by Port Dickson Hospital.

“It is the employer’s responsibility, under Section 15(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994, to ensure a workplace’s safety and health.

“Employers have full control over any activity at a workplace; they must analyse the risk and have effective risk control before any work activity is carried out.

“This is to prevent or reduce safety risks for employees and the public, and to avoid any accidents during such activities,” the state JKKP director’s office said in a statement today.

The department said it views the matter seriously, adding that employers are responsible for all occupational accidents or diseases caused by any activity within the employment sector.

It also added that it remains committed to improving the level of occupational safety and health in the country.

Yesterday, images and a minute-long video of the explosion of several fireworks shells at the hotel went viral on X (formerly Twitter). – January 2, 2024
