KUALA LUMPUR – The death of a female detainee at the Sultanah Maliha Hospital in Langkawi on December 16 has been ruled as a case of sudden death, police said.

An autopsy conducted at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar yesterday on the 34-year-old woman, who was remanded at the Kuah police headquarters from December 12 for a drug related offence, revealed that her cause of death was pneumonia.

According to Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) director Datuk Seri Azri Ahmad, autopsy results indicated that the victim did not suffer injuries consistent with criminal elements and was Covid-19 negative at the time of her death.

“The doctor has confirmed that the cause of death was pneumonia and has classified the incident as sudden death.

“The Criminal Investigation Unit for Deaths in Custody (USJKT) as well as JIPS will continue to investigate the matter from all angles before handing over investigation results to the coroner,” Azri added.

On December 16, it was reported that the woman had died while receiving treatment at the hospital in Langkawi, after complaining that she was feeling unwell the previous day. – December 18, 2023
