MCMC must ensure telecommunication companies impose no additional charges for using 5G

KUALA LUMPUR – The government will consider taking action against telecommunications companies that charge their existing subscribers additional fees for accessing 5G services, according to Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He emphasised that he has made it clear to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) that telecommunication companies must ensure there are no additional charges for using 5G.

“It’s essential to note that the entire infrastructure cost, up to the point of signing the share subscription agreement (SSA), was funded by the public’s money.

“Therefore, there should not be any extra fees. If they continue to impose such charges, we will have to consider taking action,” he said on the sidelines of the launch of OK Vision, a subscriber-based television service, here today.

Fahmi also said that in his recent conversation with CelcomDigi Bhd chief executive officer, the company announced a revision of its packages.

“In its new packages, it has eliminated the additional fees. This is what CelcomDigi conveyed to me,” he added. – December 18, 2023
