Weekly Covid-19 cases skyrocket to over 20,000, doubled since early Dec

Total number of active infections in Malaysia now at 28,375

KUALA LUMPUR – The number of reported Covid-19 cases in Malaysia has reached 20,696 cases from December 10 to 16, an increase of almost 8,000 since the week prior.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by @Covid19Place that was also shared by Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad, this also puts the total number of active cases at 28,375 this week.

The prevalence of the virus also resulted in 28 new deaths this week, while another 588 individuals were hospitalised. Meanwhile, 22 intensive care units and 14 ventilators were used. 

The number of new cases more than doubled since the beginning of the month.

In contrast, Malaysia had reported 12,757 new Covid-19 cases from December 3 to 9, and 11 deaths from the virus. 

As of December 2, Malaysia only recorded 6,796 new cases, six deaths and 15,327 active cases.

Following the concerning increase in cases, the Health Ministry encouraged people to wear face masks, especially during the ongoing holiday season.

It also advised those showing Covid-19 symptoms to avoid “3C areas,” which are crowded places, close-contact settings as well as confined and enclosed spaces. 

The ministry will roll out a third booster vaccine for vulnerable groups, which are the elderly and those with comorbidities. – December 17, 2023
