Senior cop remanded three days over fatal hit-and-run incident involving student

Officer's remand order began today, as the investigation begins in earnest

KUALA LUMPUR – A senior police officer, who was arrested last night in connection with an accident in which a 17-year-old secondary school pupil was killed in Ipoh, has been remanded for three days until Monday.

The suspect is a deputy superintendent of police (DSP) ranking officer at the Kedah Serious Crimes Division, Berita Harian reported.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that the officer’s remand order began today, assuring that a holistic investigation would be conducted in a fair and just manner.

He also noted that the Ipoh district police chief, the Perak police chief, and the Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department have been ordered to conduct a detailed and thorough investigation.

Ipoh police assistant commissioner Yahaya Hassan that the accident occurred on Jalan Taman Jati in Meru, Ipoh, at 12.40pm on Friday (December 15).

Based on investigations, the victim was riding a motorcycle while the 44-year-old officer was driving a car.

The student died at the scene, while the policeman was unharmed, Yahaya said in a statement, adding that the post-mortem examination revealed that the victim had chest and abdominal injuries.

He said aside from investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, the police are also investigating the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code (for murder). – December 16, 2023
