KUALA LUMPUR – A woman died after she was believed to have been beaten by her husband with a dumbbell at their home in Jalan Sungai Congkak, near Shah Alam.

Shah Alam district police chief asst commissioner Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the victim, who was working as a teacher in Sarawak, was believed to have been assaulted by her 38-year-old husband due to jealousy.

Mohd Iqbal said the police received a report from the suspect at 5.33am on Thursday, stating that the victim was suffering from fits and was brought to the Shah Alam Hospital in an unconscious state.

Initial examinations by the doctor on the victim revealed several injuries throughout her body.

“Further investigations by the police revealed that the victim was beaten by the suspect due to jealousy at their home before being brought to the hospital.

“Acting on the information, an arrest was made on the suspect at the Shah Alam Hospital at 12.49pm yesterday,” he said in a statement.

The police, Mohd Iqbal said, also seized a dumbbell, believed to be used to assault the wife.

He added that the couple had just gotten married in April and had no children.

“The victim returned here on leave to attend the wedding of a relative,” he said.

The self-employed suspect, he said, had two previous records related to assault and drugs.

“Urine test conducted on the suspect found him positive for methamphetamine.

“The suspect is set to be remanded at Shah Alam court, today,” he said.

Mohd Iqbal said the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty if found guilty.

“Any individual with further information related to the case may contact investigation officer Mohd Affandi Ahmad at 016-7252948,” he added. – December 16, 2023
