KUALA LUMPUR – Selangor DAP vice-chairman Ng Suee Lim has been conferred a “Datuk” title in conjunction with the 78th birthday of Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.

Ng, who is also Sekinchan assemblyman, received the Darjah Kebesaran Datuk Paduka Mahkota Selangor (D.P.M.S.) (Second Class) award, which carries the title of “Datuk” for men and “Datin Paduka” for women.

For the record, DAP’s party policy prohibits elected representatives from accepting any titles prior to their retirement from elected office to ensure that such members focus on serving the people.

In October, DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said the Pakatan Harapan component member’s central executive committee had reprimanded two Sabah party leaders who had accepted honorific titles in breach of party policy.

The two leaders – Kota Kinabalu MP and Sabah DAP committee member Chan Foong Hin, as well as Luyang assemblyman and state party secretary Phoong Jin Zhe – had received the Panglima Gemilang Darjah Kinabalu award in conjunction with Sabah governor Tun Juhar Mahiruddin’s birthday this year.

Later, Chan and Phoong apologised for violating the party’s policy, saying they had previously explained their decision to accept the awards while repeating their claim that they were acting out of respect for the Sabah governor and the state government.

Scoop has reached out to Ng and Loke for comments on the acceptance of the award.

Meanwhile, another receiver of the D.P.M.S award was Court of Appeal judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who has presided over a number of high-profile cases when he was a high court judge, such as those involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
