PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has lauded his fellow ministers and lawmakers for their unwavering loyalty, contrary to those who were in previous governments.
During his policy address at the PKR national congress today, Anwar reminisced on the struggles of the unity government’s first few months.
“The initial months (of the unity government) were indeed a bit uncertain because of the constant attempts to entice us to repeat the practice of ‘tebuk atap’, but the loyalty of our unity government allies has been commendable.
“I would like to express my appreciation to the people here for their loyalty, despite being threatened and enticed by a few leaders, who promised the post of prime minister if they accepted the offers,” he said during his speech at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre, late yesterday evening.
Anwar said that the loyalty of his “friends” under his leadership is the reason the government has lasted for a year now, adding that his inclusive government represents people of all walks of life.
“For the past year, we have focused our attention on leading our country to be strong and respected by the world as a nation that can boost its economy.”
Yesterday marked Anwar’s one-year anniversary as prime minister after being sworn in on November 25 last year, following the 15th general election.
On another matter, Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan chairman, said that he is willing to face any consequences for expressing support for coalition partner DAP, even if it means a “slight” loss of support.
Although the government is not against individuals voicing out for Malay rights, Anwar said it was not reasonable for a certain “haji” and “ustaz” to insult a race and still be lauded for it.
While he did not mention names, Anwar was believed to be referring to PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, who had previously criticised DAP as having an “anti-Islam” and “communist” agenda.
However, Anwar pointed out DAP had no qualms when the government introduced programmes that favour Islam, the Malays and the Bumiputeras.
“How can we portray ourselves with Islamic morals if we are inclined to insult and slander?” he asked. – November 26, 2023
