[UPDATED] Muhyiddin says won’t defend Bersatu presidency

Party leader says ongoing AGM will be his last as president

SHAH ALAM – Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has revealed that the party’s annual general meeting today will be his last as Bersatu president.

Speaking at Bersatu’s sixth AGM, he said he will not be defending his post as president in the upcoming party polls, which are expected to take place next year.

However, his announcement was met with vehement rejection by party members in the hall, who were calling for him to retract his decision.

At a press conference later, the former prime minister said that Bersatu should not depend on a single person.

“We have many political leadership figures in Bersatu with calibre.

“Maybe some will say that they are not like me, but if they are given the chance to lead the party – and God willing, the government – I trust that they can,” he told the media at the Ideal Convention Centre, here where the party AGM is being held.

He will remain a Bersatu member, saying the party is “in his blood till death”.

Muhyiddin also hoped that the party would hold thorough discussions on finding his successor to avoid causing divisions and infighting.

In the meantime, he said he would still execute his duties as president until the end of his tenure.

“As long as I am president, I have a responsibility. I will do what is necessary as the president of a party that I have been (leading) since its birth,” he said.

Muhyiddin, who was the country’s eighth prime minister from March 2020 to August 2021, founded Bersatu in August 2016 together with his predecessor, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. – November 24, 2023
