No to Coldplay show in KL because band supports LGBT: PAS MP defends stance

Band’s support for Palestine doesn’t excuse it, says Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki

KUALA LUMPUR – Just hours before British rock band Coldplay rocks the Bukit Jalil National Stadium tonight, Mohd Misbahul Munir Masduki (Parit Buntar-PN), continued to voice his disagreement with the concert at the Dewan Rakyat.

Addressing the lower House, Misbahul pointed out that just because the band supported the Palestinian cause, this does not mean that others should be ignorant of its support for the global LGBT movement.

He was answering a question posed by Datuk Rosol Wahid (Hulu Terengganu–PN), who questioned if Coldplay was allowed to perform in Malaysia just because the band shows its support towards Palestinians.

“Palestinian causes are humanitarian causes but it doesn’t mean that they (Coldplay) are allowed to perform because of their support towards that cause.

“(However), while I am not saying that the bandmates are LGBT practitioners, we do have proof that the band has been publicly stating their support towards the cause in many ways, such as donating over US$9,000 (RM42,120) to an LGBT organisation in Australia that campaigned for same-sex marriage.

“They have also shown their support for the equality cause in 2017. Furthermore, many times, the band has shown support towards both causes in many interviews.

“Therefore it is unreasonable why they are allowed to perform here, in this country,” he said.

Yesterday in the Dewan Rakyat, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the concert had received the green light from the government, while several lobbyists from the pro-Palestine movement have expressed their support regarding the band’s performance. – November 22, 2023
