PETALING JAYA – Cahya Mata Cement Sdn Bhd’s freshly-inked partnership with Sinoma Industry Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd will allow the latter to undertake a comprehensive technical analysis of the former’s plans to optimise its existing facilities and construct a new clinker line.

The technical consultancy agreement between the Bursa Malaysia-listed Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd’s subsidiary and Sinoma Industry was sealed during a signing ceremony at the Sheraton, Petaling Jaya.

Sinoma Industry, a subsidiary of the China-based Tianjin Cement Industry Design and Research Institute (TCDRI), is said to have vast industry experience and technical expertise in the development of cement plants globally.

The collaboration comes amidst news that Cahya Mata is planning to expand its clinker production capacity with the construction of an approximately RM750 million new production line at its integrated complex in Mambong, Kuching.

The project, which was initially announced in June and is expected to be completed within 36 months, will reportedly see the construction of a clinker line with a daily production capacity of 6,000 metric tonnes per day, equivalent to an annual capacity of 1.9 million tonnes.

Clinker is the material produced in the calcination stage and is typically used as a binding agent in many cement products.

The technical assessment and studies undertaken by Sinoma Industry under its collaboration with Cahya Mata Cement is projected to optimise the latter’s manufacturing capabilities at its existing Mambong Line 1 and ensure the success of the Clinker Line 2 project.

For Mambong Line 1, Sinoma Industry’s studies will focus on technology sharing and transfer of technical know-how aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, cost-effectiveness and the production and manufacturing output.

Sinoma Industry will also undertake a separate evaluation for the engineering, procurement, construction and commissions of the Clinker Line 2.

In his speech at the signing event today, Cahya Mata group chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zahidi Zainuddin said that the collaboration with Sinoma Industry is testament of the group’s continual commitment towards developing Sarawak through its business, which represents an integral part of the construction supply chain.

“The new Clinker Line 2 will provide us adequate reserve production capacity to materially reduce the risk of supply disruptions, provide additional gateways to nearby export markets and the capability to produce multiple types of cement.

“This joint effort with Sinoma Industry will leave a lasting impact on Sarawak’s development and contribute to Sarawak’s flourishing landscape,” he added.

Meanwhile, Sinoma Industry managing director Liu Tao said that the partnership exemplifies the company’s commitment to supporting the sustainable development of Sarawak’s cement industry.

“We aim to create a lasting impact on the cement industry of Borneo as a whole, fostering sustainable growth through technological advancement.”

Established in 1974, Cahya Mata’s current portfolio spans over 35 companies involved in, among others, cement production, phosphates manufacturing, oil tools, green technology, road maintenance, property development and financial services. – November 20, 2023
