KUALA KUBU BARU – The Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) in Felda Soeharto, Hulu Selangor, has excited students buzzing with enthusiasm and eagerness to delve into the dynamic world of information and communication technology (ICT) development.

Iman Zul Fitri Effendi, a Year 2 student at SRA Kg Soeharto, expressed his gratitude for being able to learn about computer usage through the PEDi e-learning programme.

“Every week, I attend PEDi sessions with my friends, and it’s the most exciting thing. The place is also comfortable,” he said when met at the centre recently.

Another student, Syahmi Rifqi Shamsul Khairi, 8, said he only took two days to learn how to use the keyboard at PEDi.

“I learnt how to type on the computer, it was pretty easy and in two days, I have mastered typing and spelling words,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nurhasni Haizan Hasmadun, assistant manager at PEDi Felda Soeharto, said PEDi has been offering the e-learning programme since 2013, welcoming all students to participate and gain ICT knowledge.

“We typically emphasise honing students’ typing skills through digital learning and e-tuition.

“Initially, many students were unfamiliar with computers. However, after regularly organising ICT programmes and e-learning sessions, they gradually mastered the art,” she explained.

“They not only learn how to type but also how to search for information on popular search engines like Google, understanding the correct methods for utilising computers.”  Nurhasni shared that PEDi provides 20 computers, ensuring ample resources for everyone.

Asked about the challenges of teaching e-learning, she emphasised the staff’s dedication to putting extra effort into teaching and ensuring students comprehend the material.

“We need to provide additional instruction to ensure students grasp and appreciate the content.

“To keep them engaged, we craft information sheets, ensuring students maintain interest in attending PEDi.

“During every school holiday, we seize the chance to organise enriching e-learning classes,” she explained.

Beyond educational programmes, PEDi offers various services, including entrepreneurship, photocopying, courier services, and serving as a local community centre.

In the recently announced Budget 2024 by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, RM25 million was allocated to strengthen PEDi’s role in contributing to the community. – November 21, 2023
