J-KOM DG says decision follows new job offer, departure unrelated to external pressure

KUALA LUMPUR – Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has confirmed that Community Communications (J-KOM) Department director-general Datuk Mohammad Agus Yusoff has tendered his resignation and is no longer linked to either the government or its agency.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Leaders’ Week 2023 in California, United States, Fahmi said Agus had submitted his resignation, with the government expressing its thanks for his prior service.

Commenting further, Fahmi admitted that while he has yet to discuss the matter with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, steps are being taken to replace Agus as soon as possible.

Yesterday, Agus announced his resignation to several media channels. He reportedly said the decision was made following an offer for a different job and not due to pressure from any parties.

“I have a new (job) offer, there is no pressure on me. So, when everything is confirmed, whether I want to retire or take up a new, more challenging position, wait for the update.

“If my resignation is approved by the prime minister later, I will resign immediately,” he said.

Agus began his duties as J-KOM director-general at the Prime Minister’s Office in February.

However, opposition MPs have since suggested that J-KOM be disbanded to save RM13 million in its budget due to its failure to relay government information properly.

In 2020, the PN-led government rebranded the Special Affairs Department as J-KOM, albeit with different roles and functions.

The establishment of J-KOM was aimed at creating two-way communication between the government and the people by channelling accurate, authentic and reliable information to the masses. – November 17, 2023
