KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia recorded a total of 6,164 reported cases of domestic violence leading to legal action between 2018 to 2022.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said of those charged, only 3,075 individuals admitted guilt for the offence.
Azalina revealed the data in response to a written inquiry from Syerleena Abdul Rashid (Bukit Bendera-PH) today.
Out of the total number of cases, 187 individuals accused of domestic violence under Section 326A of the Penal Code were convicted after a full trial.
“For the crime of rape under Section 376 of the same Code, there are over 4,625 cases charged in court, with 1,113 individuals pleaded guilty upon charged, and 379 found guilty after full trial.
“While there are 1,840 cases hauled to court for crimes of assaulting modesty of an individual under Section 354 of the Code, which 120 individuals convicted after a full trial, and 860 individuals pleaded guilty upon charge,” Azalina said.
Azalina reported 1,840 cases taken to court for crimes related to assaulting the modesty of an individual under Section 354 of the Penal Code.
Out of these, 120 individuals were convicted after a full trial, and 860 individuals pleaded guilty upon charge.
In addition, Azalina shed light on crimes under the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017. Out of 6,096 court cases, 1,511 individuals pleaded guilty upon charge, and 482 were convicted after a full trial.
She also shared details on cases under Section 377C, which pertains to offences of carnal intercourse against the order of nature. A total of 775 cases were taken to court, with 46 resulting in convictions after a full trial, and 173 individuals pleading guilty.
Furthermore, from 2018 to 2022, 363 individuals pleaded guilty to intentionally insulting the modesty of any woman under Section 509, while 22 were found guilty of such crimes. Overall, a total of 546 cases under the Act were brought to court during this period. – November 15, 2023
