Flash floods hit several areas in Klang Valley, PLUS Highway

6:42 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysians have taken to social media to alert others of flash floods affecting Klang Valley and parts of Ipoh today.

A video showing a flooded North-South Expressway (PLUS) near Ipoh went viral as cars would not brave the waters, leaving only one motorcyclist to make an attempt. This has caused traffic to pile up for kilometres on end.

PLUS also tweeted a 12km-long congestion at KM308.1 from Gopeng to Tapah, after a tree fell and blocked access to the left lane.

This has inconvenienced many road users who took the opportunity to balik kampung during the three-day weekend in conjunction with Deepavali celebrations.

The access road heading to Putrajaya and Cyberjaya from Puncak Jalil and Seri Kembangan was almost cut off by knee-deep floods after a downpour this afternoon.

A Facebook user known as Hafiz Hj Hamzah shared that a car was stuck under a flyover in Sg Merab as floodwaters were nearly three feet high.

In a separate post, a Facebook user shared a photo of a car that was stranded in front of the Dato Abu Bakar Baginda police station in Kajang.

Meanwhile, Facebook user Mantera Beradu took a video of a flooded road near the Kg Dato Harun Komuter station in Petaling Jaya where drivers had to slowly take the right most lane to avoid their cars being inundated as well.

As for motorists heading towards IOI Mall Puchong, they are advised to use alternative routes as the Subang Jaya City Council (MBSJ) has issued a level three danger alert as the monsoon drains have reached their maximum capacity.

“All nearby residents should take precautionary measures and be ready to evacuate if instructed,” it said.

As of 4.15pm, the Damansara-Puchong Expressway reopened the left and middle lanes at KM21.5 after the floods completely subsided.

The Meteorological Department has issued a warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in 12 states until 9pm tonight.

It also issued an alert-level continuous rain warning for Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Sabah, from November 16 to 19. – November 13, 2023
