UMS confirms maggot infested water tank at student campus after viral TikTok video

The water tank has since been emptied and reportedly removed by university staff

SANDAKAN – University Malaysia Sabah (UMS) in Kota Kinabalu has confirmed that a water tank at one of its student campuses is polluted, after a video was uploaded on TikTok showing a water tank containing maggots.

In a statement yesterday, the UMS’ corporate communication centre confirmed the incident and said the tank is located at the Tun Pangiran Ahmad Raffae residential college, which is in the university compound.

However, UMS said the tank is sourced from a tubewell, so it does not affect the water source from the Sabah Water Department, which is the main source for the students’ daily use.

“Following the incident, the UMS development and maintenance department had ordered the maintenance contractor to empty the tank, and to monitor each building’s facilities in the university to mitigate safety and health risks, especially those affecting the students.”

Yesterday, TikTok user Kurimasakuti shared a video showing the inside of a water tank which was filled with live maggots.

He claimed that some students saw a monkey falling into the tank several days before, and that the carcass caused the maggots.

It was learned that students had to collect water from the tank and carry it to their dorm for daily use following a water supply disruption that lasted several days on the campus.

Today, user Kurimasakuti posted another video on TikTok showing several men removing the tank, believed to be workers sent by the university. – November 11, 2023
