Traffic nightmare: Deepavali exodus causes 12km traffic jam on KL-Karak Expressway

This, as holidaymakers balik kampung during three-day weekend

KUALA LUMPUR – Those on a balik kampung exodus to the east coast can expect to be stuck in traffic for at least 12km along the Gombak-Genting Sempah route on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway.

Traffic is also building up before and after the Gombak toll plaza, as well as a minimum one-hour delay along the Genting Sempah-Bukit Tinggi route.

According to LPTTrafik on X (formerly Twitter), the heavy traffic is due to an increased number of vehicles on the road.

Malaysia is enjoying a three-day weekend as Deepavali falls on Sunday this year, with Monday as a replacement public holiday.

Meanwhile, traffic is slow from Ipoh to Sg Perak along the North-South Expressway.

According to Astro Radio Traffic, this is partly due to a stalled bus on the left lane at KM258 from Ipoh to Sg Perak.

“Expect a 1 hour delay from Ipoh-Sg Perak due to a stalled bus on the left lane at KM258.

“There’s also slow traffic from Rawang-Sg Buaya, Bukit Beruntung- Tanjung Malim, Slim River-Sungkai, Bidor-Gopeng.”

The Malaysia Highway Authority has predicted more than two million vehicles on the North-South Expressway in conjunction with Deepavali celebrations this weekend.

The KL-Karak Expressway, East Coast Expressway Phase 1, and East Coast Expressway Phase 2 are predicted to have 173,000, 71,000, and 50,000 vehicles, respectively. – November 11, 2023
