Thunderstorms, strong winds hit 13 states tonight

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysia Meteorological Department has issued a warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds that are expected in 13 states, except Melaka.

The warning issued at 5.50pm showed that the heavy rain is expected to last until 9pm tonight.

The 13 affected states include Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Perlis, Kedah, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Negri Sembilan, Sabah and Sarawak.

“A warning is issued when there are signs of a thunderstorm with rain intensity exceeding 20mm/hour that is close or expected to occur for more than an hour. 

“A thunderstorm warning is a short-term warning valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single release,” it said.

Some of the affected areas include Selangor (Hulu Selangor, Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Langat), Kedah (Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Pendang, Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu).

Others include Perak (Kerian, Larut, Matang Dan Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Batang Padang and Muallim), Kelantan (Jeli, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang), Terengganu (Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang and Dungun), Pahang (Tanah Tinggi Cameron, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Pekan and Rompin).

Also affected are Negri Sembilan (Seremban, Port Dickson, Kuala Pilah, Rembau and Tampin); Sabah in the West Coast (Ranau and Kota Belud), Sandakan (Kinabatangan) and Kudat (Kota Marudu); and Sarawak in Kuching (Bau and Lundu), Sarikei (Meradong), Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah (Tg Manis), Bintulu, and Miri (Beluru, Telang Usan and Marudi). – November 2, 2023
