KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin’s victory at the Masjid Tanah parliamentary constituency during the 15th general election has been retained by the election court in Melaka, today.
This comes after the Melaka High Court, through election court judge Datuk Abu Bakar Katar, dismissed Barisan Nasional’s (BN) petition to nullify the Perikatan Nasional (PN) lawmaker’s electoral victory.
He dismissed the election petition from BN candidate Abdul Hakim Abdul Wahid to quash Mas Ermieyati’s win in the seat.
Mas Ermieyati’s counsel Mohd Faizi Che Abu told Malaysiakini of the decision, which was made during open-court proceedings.
Hakim had initially filed the petition, claiming the presence of corrupt practices during the election campaigning period, in October and November of last year.
The high court had initially struck out the petition on February 7, after allowing PN’s preliminary objection.
Upon the petitioner’s subsequent appeal, the Federal Court ordered the election petition be sent back to the high court for a full hearing of its merits.
On September 25, Hakim had reportedly failed to call key witnesses for the trial. — October 27, 2023
