Court sentences teen arsonists to 100 hours of scrubbing toilets 

This comes after the two accused, both 16, set fire to a public toilet as a prank, killing another teenager

KUALA SELANGOR – The magistrates’ court here today sentenced two teenagers to 100 hours of community service washing toilets over a six-month period for causing mischief by fire at a public toilet in Bandar Puncak Alam last year.

Magistrate Siti Hajar Ali also ordered a good behaviour bond of RM1,000 each for two years in addition to reporting to the nearest police station once a month during the same period after the two juveniles pleaded guilty in the case today.

“You also cannot leave the house alone from 8pm to 6am unless accompanied by your parents. You have to attend a workshop run by the Social Welfare Department,” she said.

According to the charge, the two teenage boys, aged 16 and still in school, were accused of committing mischief by fire, which caused the destruction of the public toilet of a futsal court in Phase 3 of Bandar Puncak Alam here at 2.47pm on August 28, 2022.

The offence was committed under Section 436 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine.

Earlier in the proceedings, the social welfare representative submitted a moral report on the two accused as well as two recommendations, including good behaviour.

Two public advisers also gave a statement in the court gallery reprimanding the two accused for destroying public property and affecting the family (by causing the death) of the late male teenage victim (Muhammad Damin Mikhail Kansol).

Deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Afiq Qiwamuddin Mustapha Shakri also asked for appropriate punishment to be imposed on the two accused because the incident involved public interest.

Also present in the proceedings was the legal observer lawyer, Johan Ariff Salim Khan, representing the victim’s family. Both accused were not represented by lawyers throughout the proceedings.

The teenage boy, Damin, 16, was found dead in a fire at a public toilet in Bandar Puncak Alam, where two of his friends committed a prank last year. – October 25, 2023
