Education Ministry to study proposal on electing school prefects

This after opposition MP moots idea for better political literacy among youth

KUALA LUMPUR – The Education Ministry has welcomed a proposal for school prefects to be elected, and will study it.

Deputy minister Lim Hui Ying responded positively to the suggestion by Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (Indera Mahkota-PN) in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Bersatu’s Saifuddin had been speaking about steps to improve political literacy among school children, and suggested practical ways like holding elections.

He said this could be done for school prefects, and that this had been done in the past by some mission schools.

Lim called it a “very good proposal”, adding: “We will review this and I thank you (for the suggestion),” Bernama quoted her saying.

School prefects are currently selected by teachers, and Saifuddin said holding elections for them would help the youth be familiar with the voting process when they reach the age of 18 and are able to vote in federal and state elections. – October 23, 2023
