KUALA LUMPUR – PAS lawmaker Datuk Awang Hashim has questioned Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s motives over his recently reported invitation for the party to join the unity government.
Speaking to the press after the tabling of Budget 2024 at Parliament today, the Pendang MP questioned the motives behind such an invitation, as it was not extended to Perikatan Nasional (PN).
However, he admitted to not having personal knowledge of the invite, having only learned about it in the news.
“Why did our prime minister only extend an invite to PAS? Why not PN? Is he trying to divide us? I don’t think the invite was sincere, and definitely… we will reject it.
“We are politicians, you know; we’d think twice. Things are (currently) okay between PAS and PN, there’s no problem.”
Time Magazine recently reported that Anwar remained open to PAS joining the unity government.
He noted that the largest party within the opposition bloc had also been contemplating such a move since he assumed office in November last year. It was previously reported on November 24 that PAS, in congratulating Anwar for being named prime minister, also said it would “think about the offer”. – October 13, 2023
