If DPM allows it, I’ll be there: Amanah’s Sany on PAS’ Palestine solidarity gathering

Hulu Langat MP claims to be ‘demonstration king’ in former party, leading Young wing protests

KUALA LUMPUR – Mohd Sany Hamzan (Hulu Langat-PH) has accepted an invitation from PAS to participate in the party’s gathering as a show of support in solidarity with Palestine this Friday, pending approval of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Bagan Datuk-BN).

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat, Sany claimed to be the “demonstration king” when he was still affiliated with PAS, and often led protests organised by the party’s Youth wing.

“I will be there, if the deputy prime minister permits me to attend, Insya-Allah,” he said to laughter across the lower house.

Sany was responding to opposition MPs Ahmad Tarmizi Sulaiman (Sik-PN) and Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim (Arau-PN), who asked whether he would show up this Friday.

He was also calling on the federal government to utilise all its strengths and channels to assist the Palestinians in their struggles.

Budget 2024 is also scheduled to be tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also finance minister, in the Dewan Rakyat on Friday at 4pm.

Earlier today, PAS called on its members and supporters to show their solidarity with the Palestinian people on Friday, by gathering at various mosques across the country.

In another statement last weekend, PAS president Tan Sri Hadi Abdul Awang (Marang-PN) urged Muslims to engage in solat hajat and recite prayers for Muslims in Gaza while also suggesting that they convene for a solidarity gathering against Israel’s oppressive actions.

Meanwhile, DAP’s R.S.N. Rayer (Jelutong-PH) suggested that lawmakers should be allowed to assist Palestine in the conflict by physically being there to give out medication to the affected people.

“The debate must be translated to a mission, whether it is medicinal or involving our military forces, or a peaceful mission to care for the Palestinians.

“For the medicinal mission, maybe we can suggest MPs participate and go there to give medicine to affected Palestinians.”

Earlier, Zahid urged the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to take immediate action to de-escalate the ongoing clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters in and around the Gaza Strip.

In his ministerial statement in Dewan Rakyat today, he added that Malaysia would remain committed to supporting finding a fair solution to the conflict.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported that more than 123,000 Palestinians have been forced to flee their homes in the Gaza Strip as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict escalates.

Anwar, meanwhile, has also urged the UNSC to convene an emergency session to de-escalate the ongoing clashes in the Gaza Strip, calling on the international community to cease all one-sided actions perpetuating cruelty and oppression against the Palestinians.

The surge in violence followed a surprise attack by Hamas on Saturday, involving dozens of fighters infiltrating an Israeli city near the coastal enclave amid intense rocket fire. The aim of its Operation Al-Aqsa Flood is to put an end to Israeli “violations”.

In turn, the Israeli army initiated Operation Swords of Iron against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said we are “at war”.

Palestine’s Health Ministry said the death toll from the Israeli bombings in the Gaza Strip has risen to 413, including 78 children and 41 women. – October 9, 2023
