KUALA LUMPUR – Police have confirmed that the family of four who went missing after their holiday at Pulau Perhentian left the Kuala Besut jetty in Terengganu on Sunday.

Besut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad told Scoop that the authorities had obtained a new lead in the case.

“We are tracking them down based on this new development,” he said, adding that a family member had lodged a report yesterday.

He added that a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera caught them in a blue Proton Saga BLM with registration number plate JRW6380 heading out of Kuala Besut towards the Kg Seberang Kastam bridge at 10.06am on Sunday.

“However, they have yet to be located and contacted.”

He said early investigations found that the four arrived at Pulau Perhentian on September 29 and went snorkelling over the weekend before leaving the island on Sunday.

“But the boat operator informed the mother-in-law and younger brother’s phones had been damaged after being exposed to water. They supposedly said they will head to Batu Buruk in Kuala Terengganu after leaving Pulau Perhentian.”

He also urged the members of the public who have any information regarding the family’s location to contact investigating officer Nur Izzati Arina (017-379 2157) or go to the nearest police station.

The police have also warned against speculations and the spread of fake news, which can interrupt the investigation.

Earlier today, Scoop reported that a man was seeking help to find his missing two children, mother-in-law and younger brother, during their holiday at Pulau Perhentian on September 29.

The Facebook user, known as Ah Pek, posted that he last contacted them on September 29, and that the car they were in was parked at Kuala Besut jetty before they got on a boat heading to the island.

Ah Pek was at Besut and tried to get information from the boat service company, and the resort the family of four stayed at Pulau Perhentian.

Meanwhile, Khursani Ab Manaf, believed to be a tour guide in Pulau Perhentian, said the two adults and two children used his boat to head to the island at 9.45am last Friday.

“They stayed at Senja Bay (Perhentian Kecil) for two nights,” he said in a separate Facebook post last night.

He added that the family took a boat back to the Kuala Besut jetty at 8am last Sunday. – October 3, 2023
