KUALA LUMPUR – Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan has hit back at online critics who posted unsavoury comments about him eating a mooncake.
On Twitter, the DAP lawmaker noted the antics of some netizens, who he believed were Perikatan Nasional (PN) supporters, deriding him for consuming the Chinese delicacy in conjunction with the Mid-Autumn Festival.
“When I posted this picture (of eating mooncake), I guessed as much that the ‘Pelampau (extremist) Nasional’s supporters would get heated,” he said in a play of words against the opposition coalition.
“As I expected, this would not sit well (with the supporters of PN). There are even some saying that there is no halal mooncake…hahahah.”
Syahredzan also labelled the critics “otak jumud” (narrow-minded), which was why they supported PN.
In the Tweet, Syahredzan shared three comments by users, one of whom sarcastically asked him whether he thought the pork-based dish Bak Ku Teh tasted better.
Another netizen suggested that it was “not surprising” that Syahredzan would eat the Chinese bakery product because “DAP stooges enjoyed stuff like this”.
Another netizen by the name of Cypro Jack suggested that halal mooncakes did not exist.
On his original post which was uploaded on Facebook, another commenter labelled Syahredzan as a “pengkhianat bangsa” (race traitor).
Despite the racially-charged diatribes, some netizens were quick to defend the politician.
Sim Wah Seng said: “As long as the mooncake is certified halal….enjoy the cultures….do not be bothered by small-minded, cave dwellers, who know nothing about diversified cultures, which is our strength (sic).
Another social media user @billynishiki saw nothing wrong with Syahredzan digging into the food item.
“Just eat it if it’s halal bro. In every faction, there will be those who are overzealous. We criticise others, others criticise us.” – September 30, 2023
