KUALA LUMPUR – The Perikatan Nasional (PN) Youth-organised “Save Malaysia” rally is set to take place at Kg Baru, here, on Malaysia Day this Saturday.
In a statement issued today by the rally secretariat, it said that the location was decided following a meeting held last night.
“A meeting held last night in Kuala Lumpur agreed to form a secretariat committee for the Save Malaysia rally, which would be more inclusive in efforts to restore the integrity and dignity of the country, which has been tainted by the dropping of corruption charges against deputy prime minister (Datuk Seri Ahmad) Zahid Hamidi.
“The secretariat was formed by combining political parties, NGOs, and individuals who agreed on the same basis and principles,” the secretariat said.
However, it is unclear whether the secretariat has since applied to the police for a permit to hold the rally at the said location.
Therefore, the secretariat urged Malaysians who oppose corruption and oppose the release of the corrupt to attend and assemble in large numbers for afternoon Zohor prayers at Masjid Kg Baru.
Without naming any political figures, the secretariat also confirmed that political figureheads and non-governmental organisations will attend the assembly.
Yesterday, the police confirmed that they have yet to receive any applications to hold the Save Malaysia rally planned in the capital city on Saturday.
The federal capital’s police chief, Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid, said the provision in Section 9(1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 requires the application for a permit to be made at least five days before the date the assembly is held.
“The period has ended, but no application has been made by the organisers,” he told a press conference yesterday.
Allaudeen said that so far, police have received six reports regarding the proposed gathering purportedly being organised by Perikatan Nasional Youth.
Police have recorded statements from five individuals, including PN parliamentarians Ahmad Fadhli Shaari and Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal, to assist in the investigation, he said.
He said police also recorded statements from Gombak Setia representative Hilman Idham and two journalists who covered Fadhli’s press conference about the rally.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay had also said earlier that according to Section 9 (1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012, parties wanting to hold rallies must apply for permits five days before such a gathering is held. – September 14, 2023
