TAWAU – An apprehended driver who attempted to evade a police roadblock was discovered in possession of approximately 2kg of methamphetamine in his vehicle.

Tawau district police chief Jasmin Hussin said the incident occurred on Jalan Timur, Sin Onn, around 12pm last Wednesday. However, the unemployed individual tested negative for drug use.

Jasmin said that the 30-year-old suspect was arrested after he turned his Proton Satria Neo around upon seeing a roadblock, driving against the traffic to evade the police.

“However, the suspect was arrested on the spot not far from the roadblock. Upon inspection, the police found four small transparent plastic bags and two other ‘tea’ plastic bags, all containing what is believed to be syabu weighing 2,162.4g,” he told a press conference here, today.

The drugs seized were estimated to be worth about RM120,000.

Jasmin said that the police believed that the drugs seized were to be distributed in Tawau and its surrounding areas.

He added that the suspect was unemployed and had one past criminal record relating to drug abuse. He is currently remanded for seven days beginning September 7.

The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for dangerous drug trafficking which carries a death sentence, life imprisonment, or whipping of not less than 12 strokes, upon conviction.

“The police would like to stress that drug trafficking and abuse are against the law. We welcome cooperation from the public, and would appreciate information to assist us in our effort to fight against this crime,” he added. – September 8, 2023
