Muda threatens to leave unity govt, demands action with ‘Dakwa Zahid’ campaign

Muda party leaders and council members believe the unity government is no longer as committed to fighting corruption

KUALA LUMPUR – Muda has issued an ultimatum and signalled its intentions concerning its role in the unity government, in response to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s recent discharge without an acquittal (DNAA) for his 47 corruption charges.

Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz said the youth-centric party will not hesitate to “take action” regarding its position in the unity government if no further steps are taken regarding Zahid’s DNAA.

This ultimatum follows an announcement by Muda to launch a nationwide campaign titled the ‘Kempen Dakwa Zahid’ (Charge Zahid Campaign) in protest of the DNAA.

Amira said that the party’s leaders and council members unanimously agreed in a recent meeting that the government’s decision indicated a departure from its previous commitment to combat corruption.

“Muda unanimously considers the AGC’s (Attorney-General’s Chambers) decision as a clear signal that the unity government today is not fighting the issue of misconduct in this nation,” she told a press conference at party headquarters today.

“This is not the first case. Muda has demanded an explanation for several other issues before this. The issue yesterday was where a ‘red line’ was crossed.

“Muda will not hesitate to take harsh and decisive action on its position in the unity government, if no further action is taken from the government and the leadership of Malaysia.”

Additionally, Amira called on lawmakers within the unity government, including party president and Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, to issue statements on the matter.

She argued that the people deserve to know the thoughts and positions of their representatives.

The ‘Dakwa Zahid Campaign’ seeks several outcomes, including an explanation from the AGC in Parliament regarding its decision on Zahid’s case and a clear timeline for the separation of the public prosecutor’s role from the AGC.

Furthermore, the campaign calls for Zahid to face immediate charges once again and insists that no future cases involving public funds should be similarly dropped. – September 5, 2023
