JOHOR BARU – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has openly admitted to the existence of “weaknesses” in the government’s communication system, resulting in various accusations and slander on social media.
He acknowledged that these communication issues had stirred political polemics, causing aid messages and government initiatives to not reach those in need.
“While the opposition discusses Islam while wearing a serban (turban), they engage in defamatory actions. I have been accused of betraying Islam, but when I asked in Parliament what exactly I had betrayed, there was no substantial response.
“I aim to be fair to everyone, and I acknowledge our communication shortcomings,” Anwar, who is also Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman, said.
“When I discussed the border demarcation with President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, the opposition, the Perikatan Nasional chairman, and others accused me of selling out Malaysia, despite the fact that the agreement had been under negotiation for decades.
“It’s important to note that the resolution of border issues involves various authorities such as the military, mapping departments, and many others, not just politicians.”
Speaking about the lack of educational opportunities for hearing-impaired students sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination, Anwar committed to addressing the issue promptly, even though he anticipated that it might take some time to implement a solution.
“I will bring this matter to the cabinet for review and discussion. Hopefully, we can incorporate it into our government planning as soon as possible,” he said.
Responding to criticisms of his engagement with students and the accusation that he was neglecting his duties as prime minister, Anwar said it was essential for him as a leader to meet with various stakeholders.
“We may not agree on everything, but we should listen to different perspectives. Where I lack answers, I will raise the matter in the cabinet,” he said.
Anwar also revealed that the government would consider adjusting the salaries of lecturers and civil servants, who had not seen an increase in a decade or more, next year.
“It’s concerning that salaries haven’t been reviewed for 12 years, although the rule stipulates a review every 10 years. I acknowledge this responsibility and have activated a committee to study and determine the necessary steps,” he said. – September 3, 2023
