KUALA LUMPUR – PKR member Datuk Law Choo Kiang has been appointed Penang speaker for the third consecutive term, despite speculations that DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng was lobbying for the position.
Law, who is a former Bukit Tambun assemblyman, has been serving as state speaker since 2013.
Meanwhile, Amanah’s sole elected representative Azrul Mahathir Aziz has been appointed deputy speaker after retaining his Bayan Lepas seat in the recent state election.
However, the state opposition leader was not named, with Law saying, “Masalah belum selesai” (problems not resolved).

Pakatan Harapan (PH) retained Penang for another term with now-ally Barisan Nasional (BN) securing 29 of the 40 state seats.
Since BN lost the state in the 2008 general election, the speaker’s seat has been held by PH component PKR.
The house also witnessed the swearing-in of all the state elected representatives, which was led by second term Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow (Padang Kota-PH). – August 29, 2023
