Suhaila ‘investigates’ on her own to confirm husband’s fate in Elmina crash

She says she only learned of his death through social media

KLANG – Suhaila Akasha had to get information on her own in an attempt to find out if her husband, Shahrul Amir Omar, was among the victims in yesterday’s Beechcraft Premier 1 air crash near Bandar Elmina, Shah Alam.

Suhaila told Scoop that she had a strong feeling that her husband was one of the crash victims, as the plane looked like the one he boarded.

“Honestly, I only knew about his death through social media, and as a wife, I had a bad feeling and was convinced that something had happened to my husband.

“I had to find (information) on social media and fetch my children from boarding school to prepare ourselves for bad news,” she said when met at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital’s Forensics Department here today.

She added that she called her husband’s previous place of employment to get more information on the crash.

“My husband was a former navy officer, and they could only tell me that he was on the aircraft.

“I could only get confirmation (that he perished) from his current employers.”

She said that the last time she was in contact with her husband was the night before the flight.

She added that she and other family members will head home to Manjung, Perak, while waiting for the authorities to call so she can claim her husband’s remains.

“I hope that the arrangements for my husband’s funeral will be smooth.”

In the incident that happened at 2.50pm yesterday, 10 men were confirmed dead after a light aircraft crashed at Elmina township near the Guthrie Expressway.

Of the eight victims, six were passengers and two were crew members, while the other two were an e-hailing driver and a food delivery rider who were passing by the area when the plane crashed.

The plane, which took off from Langkawi and was en route to the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, received clearance to land at 2.48pm. – August 18, 2023
