KUALA LUMPUR – Nooryana Najwa Najib calls on the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) to “do the right thing and drop all charges immediately” against her father, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, and former Treasury secretary-general Tan Sri Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.
She said all six corruption charges in 2019 were baseless from the start after a leaked internal memo from the AGC surfaced, involving the 1Malaysia Development Bhd and International Petroleum Investment Company (Ipic) cases involving RM6.6 billion.
“What was revealed in the leaked memo is indeed shocking.
“The 12-page internal memo goes into great detail about why there was no case at all and that my father and Tan Sri Irwan did not commit any wrongdoing over the Ipic settlement.
“The AGC’s own prosecution team had concluded that the six charges against my father are non-starters and do not even meet the minimum requirement or threshold to even be brought to court.
“The internal memo also revealed that the AGC had interviewed 138 witnesses, and not one of the witness statements is favourable to the prosecutor’s case,” she said in her Facebook post today.
AG Tan Sri Idris Harun Azizan reportedly declined to comment on the alleged memo leak, adding that they are investigating the matter.
The AGC’s prosecution team, including former AG Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, reportedly had access to the alleged memo when it was made on September 10, 2019.
However, Thomas said he could not recall the document’s existence because he resigned six months later and claimed to have “not taken a single file”.
As such, Nooryana said Thomas’ reply was a “great insult to the public’s intelligence”.
She added that the leaked memo and its implications highlighted a potential grave abuse of the court system, leading to significant financial and reputational burdens on her father.
Najib, who was charged in October 2018, has endured a prolonged legal battle that has yet to see the inside of a courtroom.
The prosecution’s repeated requests for case postponements have delayed the legal proceedings, leaving the charges unanswered for nearly five years.
Throughout this time, Najib submitted two letters of representation, appealing for the charges to be dropped, with the first appeal being rejected in 2021. – August 18, 2023
