SHAH ALAM – The plane that crashed on the Guthrie Highway near Bandar Elmina here yesterday did not have a flight data recorder (FDR), which is not uncommon for light aircraft.

Following investigations by the Air Accident Investigation Bureau (BSKU) yesterday, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the plane only had a cockpit voice recorder (CVR), instead of both recorders.

“When we ask, certain aircraft, (such as the) light flight craft, do not have (FDRs). So, this plane only had one,” he said at a press conference near the site today.

Razarudin added that the CVR has been taken by the BSKU for further investigations.

He said they have uncovered remains of 10 bodies, one of which is complete, and 22 DNA samples of the victims’ next-of-kins have been obtained.

The search covered about 11,000 square metres, ranging from the crash impact site to the last debris they found, he added.

Razaruddin also aimed to complete the debris cleanup in five days to facilitate the residents there, and encouraged vehicle owners with dashboard cameras that recorded the incident to assist the investigation by providing authorities with information and footage.

Yesterday’s crash resulted in 10 casualties, where eight of the victims included six passengers and two crew members onboard the flight.

The remaining two victims were a motorcyclist and a motorist who were passing by when the plane crashed.

The plane was en route from Langkawi to Subang and had been cleared to land at 2.48pm yesterday. – August 18, 2023
