Downpour triggers flash floods in Shah Alam

Rising water levels in Section 9, Section 13 spark online concern

KUALA LUMPUR – Several parts of Shah Alam were struck by flash floods, especially in Sections 13 and 9, following an hour-long downpour that started at 3pm today. 

The floodwaters affected several local businesses, including eateries and cafes in the vicinity.

Several images and videos shared by netizens on Facebook and Twitter showed rising water levels submerging parked vehicles within the affected areas.

The netizens took to social media to voice their anxieties and frustrations regarding the situation.

“While waiting at Zus (a coffee shop), a sudden cry from the store staff alerted us to the flooding in the parking lot. Patrons rushed to salvage their vehicles,” netizen Syameem Ahmad said.

Commenting on the flooding in Section 13, Shah Alam, Wanda Safwan expressed her grief on Facebook, saying: “Flash floods have struck again. Unfortunately, my husband is navigating this to find his way back home.”

Other clips, showing areas submerged in water up to knee level, were also shared by affected users.

“One can only wonder how the residents here endure and manage their lives amidst the constant spectre of heavy rainfall and its repercussions,” Effa Mokhtar said of the challenges faced by those who live in these areas.

Another netizen urged the local representative to address the matter immediately.

“Immediate intervention is imperative. Najwan Halimi of the Kota Angerrik state constituency in Selangor must urgently dispatch experts to monitor the worsening situation,” urged Samsuddin on Twitter. 

The Irrigation and Drainage Department’s flood information portal reported at 6:10 p.m. that Sg Damansara in Batu Tiga, Shah Alam, had exceeded the warning level, recording a height of 5.35m compared to the average level of 2.7m. – August 16, 2023
