ALOR STAR – Kedah police have summoned Alor Star MP Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden for questioning regarding statements made during a recent Perikatan Nasional (PN) ceramah event.
In response to inquiries from Scoop, Afnan, who also holds the position of PAS Youth deputy chief, confirmed that he has been asked to provide his statement to the police later this evening.
“Yes, I have received the call to give my statement. I am fully prepared to cooperate with the authorities,” he briefly commented.
It was previously reported that Kedah police will be calling in an MP to aid investigations regarding statements made at a state elections campaign event in Sg Petani.
Speaking to reporters outside an early voting centre here, state police chief Datuk Fisol Saleh said that police have received four reports over claims made by the MP through a social media application, noting that the claim had caused confusion and slander.
He also said the claim could have threatened public and national harmony, besides threatening the personal safety of caretaker Kedah menteri besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor.
“As of now, four individuals have lodged police reports and have been called in to give their statements,” he said, adding that investigations are being conducted under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
On Sunday, Afnan, who was the last speaker at a campaign gathering in Sg Petani, had informed attendees that Sanusi was advised not to attend the event due to “security reasons” as there were “traps” laid out to incite him to do something “unexpected”.
“I would like to read out the sad news written on this paper. This morning, (Sanusi) had an important meeting in Kuala Lumpur, during which some big issues were discussed,” Afnan reportedly said during the event. – August 8, 2023
