KUALA LUMPUR – Gerakan president Datuk Dominic Lau will be lodging a police report over the ostensible hack of his Twitter account.

In a statement today, Lau said that his account administrator was “very surprised” when a tweet was posted earlier about his intentions to contest for the Pulai parliamentary seat following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, last night.

“The tweet did not come from (Lau) or an authorised administrator. For now, safety protocol measures have been activated, including changing the passwords to all of (Lau’s) official social media accounts.

“I will be lodging a police report over the issue sometime soon,” he added.

Lau also took the opportunity to express his condolences to Salahuddin’s family over the passing of the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister.

Previously, netizens were quick to criticise Lau after a screenshot of his now-deleted tweet made the rounds on social media.

According to the screenshot, the post was made at 12.37pm today, believably around the time Salahuddin was buried at the Jalan Sulong Serkat Muslim cemetery in Tanjung Piai, Johor.

In the tweet, Lau questioned if it would be acceptable for him to name himself as a candidate for the Pulai federal seat, saying: “Would it be okay if I contested in the Pulai by-election?”

Salahuddin, who was also Amanah deputy president, died at the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar at 9.23pm yesterday after undergoing surgery due to a brain haemorrhage. He was 61. – July 24, 2023
