Fake sports programmes: perps using academy names to lure victims

Deputy minister Adam Adli responds to recent cases of fraudulent badminton training packages, football tournament which never materialised despite participants’ losses and urges victims to report

KUALA LUMPUR – Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim has urged victims of fraudulent sports activities, including a recent badminton training package scam, to come forward and file police reports so that strict action can be taken.

A viral video earlier this week alleged that numerous parents had been deceived by a bogus badminton training package for school children, costing tens of thousands of ringgit. Fraudsters reportedly used various academy names as a front to lure unsuspecting victims.

In addition to the badminton scam, another case involved a football tournament in Ipoh last Saturday, which failed to take place as advertised. The so-called Under-14 11-a-side and Under-16 ASM Cup & 2025 Big Pos Cup was supposed to kick off at 7am but never materialised, leaving participants and parents in the lurch.

According to Bernama, Adam Adli said that his ministry is aware of these cases and is committed to ensuring investigations proceed swiftly.

“I urge that police reports be made, and we will ensure investigations are carried out on our end as well, including action by the Sports Commissioner,” he said.

“If it involves any national, state, district sports association or parties affiliated with the ministry, we demand strict action,” he added.

He made these remarks after officiating a Pineapple Management (Exposure and Training Course) and the Construction Personnel (Green Card) Course by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) here today. – February 25, 2025
