KUALA LUMPUR – Six individuals are under investigation for allegedly posting false and offensive content related to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Council of Rulers on Facebook.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in a statement, said an inspection operation was conducted today involving one of the suspects in Setapak, who had uploaded false content about the Council of Rulers’ meeting.
“A smartphone and a SIM card linked to the case have been confiscated to assist in the investigation.
“Forensic analysis will be conducted on the device to gather evidence for the case,” the statement read.
According to MCMC, the case is being investigated in collaboration with the Royal Malaysia Police’s Classified Criminal Investigation Department, and the suspect’s statement will be recorded tomorrow.
Earlier, MCMC also issued notices to two other suspects, requiring them to provide statements regarding content they had posted on Facebook.
“A thorough investigation will be conducted before the case is referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action.
“The investigation is being carried out under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588), which carries a maximum fine,” it added.
MCMC further stated that inspection operations for other cases would be conducted throughout the week at various locations, including Sg Petani, Kota Bharu, Kerian, and Teluk Intan.
The commission reminded the public not to misuse network services and online applications to upload false or misleading information, which could have serious consequences, including causing public panic and unrest.
MCMC also urged all parties to be cautious of manipulated content and to verify information through credible sources before sharing it.
