KUALA LUMPUR – Celebrating Christmas in a new country might sound daunting, but for Lynette Francis, a student from Manchester, United Kingdom, the excitement remains as she is amped up to mark the occasion with friends in Malaysia, whom she fondly considers her “chosen family.”
The 20-year-old law student, who arrived in Malaysia four months ago to study at a private institution in Subang Jaya, is embracing the holiday season with joy and gratitude.
“This is my first time celebrating Christmas away from my family. It has been four months since I moved to Kuala Lumpur to continue my studies in this country.
“Although I do feel a little sad being apart from my family, I am still happy and excited, and I can’t wait to celebrate Christmas with my friends here,” Lynette shared.
The festive mood was evident as Lynette joined fellow volunteers to decorate the beautiful Our Lady of Fatima Church in Brickfields. Surrounded by twinkling lights and festive ornaments, she revealed why Malaysia was her top choice for her studies.
“When I was deciding where to continue my studies, I chose Malaysia because of its unique culture and the harmonious way of life practised by its multiracial society,” she said. Lynette plans to head back to Manchester after completing her degree next August. But for now, she’s fully immersing herself in the Malaysian Christmas spirit.
Over at the church, Father Andrew Manickam, who has been serving the local community for 15 years, is gearing up for the busy holiday season.
With three Christmas Eve masses scheduled in English and Tamil, the church is set to welcome both locals and international visitors.
“Our Lady of Fatima Church is always a focal point, especially for expatriates and international visitors who also celebrate Christmas here.
“Since the church is located in the heart of the city, it is always bustling. That’s why we hold mass sessions in English and Tamil, based on the community’s requests,” he explained.
After the celebrations, Father Andrew looks forward to a quieter time back home.
“I usually head back to my hometown in Butterworth, Penang, after New Year’s because my schedule only clears up then. It’s not an issue for me, and my family fully understands that I am needed here,” he said with a warm smile.
Adding to the Christmas cheer, pharmacist Pandora Nathan, 25, has been busy helping with decorations at the church. For Pandora, Christmas is all about joy, family, and food.
“What I love most about Christmas is being able to gather with my family after a busy work schedule and exchange gifts with them.
“Most importantly, I can’t wait to enjoy my mum’s signature Christmas dish – lamb varuval – along with other treats like roast chicken,” she said, her excitement palpable.
As lights twinkle across Kuala Lumpur and the scent of festive treats fills the air, Lynette, Father Andrew, and Pandora are just a few of the many keeping the spirit of Christmas alive, spreading joy and love in true holiday fashion. – December 25, 2024
