KUALA LUMPUR — The Asian Sepaktakraw Federation (Astaf) are actively working to promote sepak takraw to the disabled (PwD) community worldwide.

Astaf president Datuk Abdul Halim Kader said the organisation would be submitting a proposal letter to governments to ensure the community is given equal opportunities in the sport, in line with efforts to encourage their participation.

“Although it is not an easy task, the countries involved have been open to discussions.

“With Astaf and the International Sepaktakraw Federation (Istaf) having a large number of members, we can ensure the expansion of sepak takraw to as many PwD communities as possible in various countries,” he said in a statement today.

Abdul Halim added that discussions with countries involved in Astaf and Istaf have also shown positive signs.

Abdul Halim, who is also Istaf secretary-general, said his organisation would reach out to the Paralympic Sports Council of each country to gain support for introducing sepak takraw to the community.

“I am confident that individuals with physical disabilities can make an impact in expanding the reach of sepak takraw in Asia and internationally.

“I also believe that by 2025/2026, Istaf can organise sepak takraw events for them in various countries as a start, not only in Malaysia but also in Thailand, Indonesia, Iran, Singapore, India, Europe, the United States and the Middle East,” he said. — December 16, 2024
