KUALA LUMPUR — National men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia remains optimistic about qualifying for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou next month, despite suffering an early exit from the China Masters today.

Zii Jia faced a tough first-round battle against India’s Lakshya Sen, ultimately losing 14-21, 21-13, 13-21.

The victory also served as redemption for Lakshya, who had narrowly missed out on an Olympic bronze medal in Paris three months ago.

For Zii Jia, the defeat has put a dent in his qualification hopes for the World Tour Finals, especially with only the top eight players earning a spot in the prestigious tournament.

However, the Kedah-born shuttler remains confident, aiming to return to the Finals for the first time since 2021.

“This is the last tournament before the World Tour Finals. I have to depend on the results here, and hopefully, I can qualify for this year’s World Tour Finals.

“Lakshya played very well today. He showed great defensive skills and executed many solid defensive shots. He deserved the win.

“Of course, there are things I need to work on, especially my unforced errors, which are still not stable.

“Personally, I feel quite confident about qualifying this year. Out of the past three years, this feels like the best chance I’ve had to make it to the World Tour Finals.

“I’m in a good position, and I’m keeping my fingers crossed,” said Zii Jia in a post-match interview with the Badminton World Federation (BWF).

Zii Jia is currently ranked sixth in the World Tour Finals standings with 74,940 points.

However, his position remains uncertain as several players below him still have a chance to overtake him at the last moment.

Zii Jia’s qualification for the World Tour Finals now depends on three players: Koki Watanabe, Lee Chun Yi, and Jonatan Christie.

He can qualify for the finals in Hangzhou if Koki, who is currently ranked seventh, fails to reach the semi-finals.

Additionally, Chun Yi, ranked ninth, and Jonatan, ranked twelfth, must not make it to the final. — November 20, 2024
