KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar has been appointed as the new Attorney-General (AG), effective tomorrow.

Dusuki replaces Tan Sri Ahmad Terrirudin Salleh, who will be vacating the post after being appointed as a Federal Court judge.

The matter was confirmed by Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, who also said that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had consented to Dusuki’s appointment in accordance with Article 145(1) of the Federal Constitution.

“The government expresses its sincere gratitude to (Terrirudin) for his service to the nation during his tenure as attorney-general,” Shamsul said in a statement today.

Terrirudin, 56, served as AG for just over a year after he took office on September 6 last year to replace Tan Sri Idrus Harun whose contract had ended.

Shamsul noted that Dusuki, 57, has served in the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) for 31 years.

Dusuki’s last post in the AGC is as head of its trial and appellate division, had previously acted as a deputy public prosecutor in Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s graft trial involving his foundation, Yayasan Akalbudi.

On September 4, Zahid, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman and Umno president, was granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) on all 47 corruption, criminal breach of trust and money laundering charges in the case.

The conditional discharge was granted by the high court here after then-AG Idrus had decided to submit an application for a DNAA following his review of facts surrounding the case.

The prosecution, led by Dusuki, had provided 11 grounds in its DNAA application before judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, who ruled that the reasons submitted were solid and convincing.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously said he couldn’t stop the DNAA application by the prosecution, as Idrus had insisted on presenting the application on September 4 as the following day marked the end of his term as AG before Terrirudin took over the post.

Idrus was appointed to the post during then-prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s administration. – November 11, 2024
