GEORGE TOWN – The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has urged residents in central and southern Seberang Perai to conserve water ahead of a scheduled disruption set to last over 24 hours, starting this Friday night.

PBAPP Chief Executive Officer, Datuk K. Pathmanathan, explained that the disruption, commencing at 10pm on Friday and expected to end by 10pm on Saturday, is crucial to facilitate the replacement of a damaged section of pipeline at Permatang Pauh. The damage was caused two weeks ago by contractors from another utility company, resulting in a significant leak.

A new 180-metre section of pipeline will be connected and commissioned near the Politeknik Seberang Perai campus in Permatang Pauh, Pathmanathan said.

He added this replacement will affect around 118,093 consumers in the central and southern Seberang Perai districts.

In central Seberang Perai, areas impacted by the disruption include Permatang Pauh, Seberang Jaya, Bukit Tengah, Juru, and the industrial zones of Bukit Tengah and Bukit Minyak, as well as the UiTM campus at Permatang Pauh.

In southern Seberang Perai, all areas will be affected except for certain locations, which will experience low water pressure. These include Bukit Panchor, Jalan Permatang Tok Mahat, Jalan Transkrian, Jalan Sg Acheh, Sg Bakau, Jalan Sg Kechil, Jalan Sempadan, and Jalan Sg Udang.

Pathmanathan emphasised the need for the pipeline repair to ensure consistent water supply across both districts, stating, “This disruption is necessary for PBAPP to address the leak and restore full functionality.”

He added that water tankers and static water tanks will be stationed at key locations throughout the affected areas. Regular updates on the repair progress will be shared via PBAPP’s Facebook page.

“PBAPP will strive to complete all water works and water supply normalisation works as planned and scheduled.

“PBAPP apologises for all inconveniences that will be caused (and) we seek the kind understanding and cooperation of water consumers in SPT and SPS,” said Pathmanathan

To prevent future disruptions, PBAPP will also carry out valve replacements in Jalan Pengkalan Tambang, northern Seberang Perai, and Kubang Sebang, along with a switchgear panel replacement at the Bukit Minyak pumping station. – October 2, 2024
