PUTRAJAYA — The sons of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Mokhzani and Mirzan, have declared their assets to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said they did so within the timeframe set by the anti-graft body which had ordered them since January to declare their assets as part of an investigation into the names mentioned in the Pandora and Panama Papers.

“They have submitted their asset declarations to us, and our investigation team is coordinating with their legal representatives to verify the information.

“Basically, they have declared their assets and that is the most important thing,” Azam told a press conference today.

Azam said MACC is communicating with Mirzan and Mokhzani’s lawyers to gather additional details and clarifications related to the declarations.

The brothers last received a one-month extension to declare their assets on August 14, after an earlier extension that was given in May.

hey had been asked to declare their assets dating back to 1981, when Dr Mahathir first became prime minister.

MACC in August 2022 began investigating entities and persons named in the Pandora and Panama Papers.

The investigation is being conducted under the MACC Act 2009, as well as the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (AMLATFPUAA). — September 18, 2024
