KUALA LUMPUR – The Sepak Takraw Association of Malaysia is determined to designate Stadium Titiwangsa as the country’s first dedicated sepak takraw stadium.
Speaking to Scoop, Sepak Takraw Association president Datuk Sumali Reduan shared that he discussed this initiative with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a meeting with the national team in July.
Sumali emphasised that Stadium Titiwangsa has a strong history of hosting numerous sepak takraw tournaments and events, although its capacity is limited to around 4,000 spectators.
He also said that the stadium is owned by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), not the Youth and Sports Ministry.
As a result, Sepak Takraw Association is seeking to negotiate with DBKL and the Federal Territories Ministry to obtain management rights for the stadium.
“I have informed the Prime Minister about this matter, and he told me that it falls under DBKL and the Federal Territories Minister. Therefore, further discussions are necessary,” said Sumali.
“We may consider forming a partnership or renting the stadium from them, but it will ultimately depend on the discretion of DBKL and the Kuala Lumpur Mayor.”
Sumali is also ready to implement supplementary support plans to revitalise Stadium Titiwangsa if the association is granted management responsibilities.
These plans would focus on generating revenue to cover maintenance costs.
“Managing the stadium requires us to find ways to cover maintenance costs to keep it in good condition. If we are entrusted with its care, we need to have a different plan, not just organising tournaments, but also creating other events to cover those costs.
“If not, we would consider a joint venture with DBKL to manage Stadium Titiwangsa,” added Sumali.
He emphasised his desire for the stadium to be known primarily as a Sepak Takraw Stadium, though he clarified that this would not exclude other sports from using the venue.
“If there are other events that want to rent and use it, that’s fine. I just want the name to be associated with sepak takraw,” he said.
If Sepak Takraw Association’s request is denied, the association may need to revisit alternative options previously suggested by the Sports Ministry, such as utilising existing facilities at universities and higher education institutions across the country. – August 29, 2024
